Pirates have been around for centuries or even earlier than that, they have been known as the criminals of the sea who used to plunder trading boats and kidnapping people for ransom. Pirates were very much feared back in the days when a huge number of them roamed the seven seas. Because of their popularity during the 17th century, pirates were featured in many classic literary fiction like Treasure Island and Peter Pan.

Over the time, a stereotypical pirate image has been slowly created which is what usually comes to our minds when the word “pirate” is mentioned. This stereotypical image usually includes a metal hook for a hand, wooden peg leg, a parrot on his shoulder, a bicorne hat, a Jolly Roger symbol, cutlass, bad teeth, earrings, a beard and an eye patch. This image was probably made famous by the portrayal of Long John Silver in the 1950 film adaptation of Treasure Island, including the stereotypical “pirate” accent. Ever since then, a modern interest in pirates have grown and they have been made even more popular by such recent hits like the Pirates of the Carribean films.
